Richard Dunn was a member of the 55th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War: Dunn, Richard F.: Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. A. Present as at 6/30/62. Paid in Richmond, 9/10/62. Entered hospital with chronic diarrhoea, 11/9/62. Contracted small pox 11/16/62, and died of it at G. H. Howard’s Grove, 12/21/62, aged 27. [Richard O’Sullivan, 55th Virginia Infantry (Lynchburg, Virginia: H. E. Howard, Inc., 1989), 120.] This is confirmed by National Archives Microfilm 324, Roll 963. He had been transferred to a small pox hospital on 29 November 1862. His signature is on file.
