Theodore Carlton married Virginia Ann Dunn on 20 September 1866 in Essex County, Virginia. He was 20; she was 21. Both were born and were living in Essex County, Virginia. He was a farmer. His parents were Lewis Carlton and Jane Durham; her parents were Samuel C. Dunn and Elizabeth McTyre. Peter Ainslie performed the ceremony. [Essex County Marriage Register 1, page 15, entry 130.]

On 21 April 1873, Theodore Carlton, S. W. Y. Muse and Thomas H. Brizendine waived the benefit of a homestead exemption and as to this obligation were bound $150. Thomas Carlton qualified as administrator of the personal estate of Lewis Carlton deceased. Signed Theodore Carlton, Saml W Y Muse, Thomas H Brizendine. Ordered recorded 21 April 1873. On 12 June 1873, sales of the personal property of Lewis Carlton were made by Theodore Carlton administrator. Among the purchasers, Samuel Dunn purchased four Jugs for 13¢, and Mrs. Catharine Carlton purchased a number of items, including a Bee Hive for 75¢. On 19 April 1875, the estate of Lewis Carlton in account with Theodore Carlton administrator was ordered recorded. Includes expenses of a trip of the administrator to North Carolina, $30.00. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 29, page 467 and pages 470–471.]
