On 4 February 1839, “For and in Consideration of the Natural love and affection which I bear toward my wife Matilda and her Children James, Anna and Sarah I Fountain Wood of the City of Vicksburg & State of Mississippi … convey unto my wife Matilda Wood & her Children James, Anna & Sarah the following Slaves Viz Leanna a Woman Slave aged about twenty five Years & her child called Henry Lenes[?], also Richard a boy Slave aged about twelve Yeares also Evelina a girl Slave aged about fifteen Yeares together with their increase the Right and title of said Slaves to Vest in my wife Matilda during her natural life” and at her decease the said before name slaves & all their increase to descend to James, Anna & Sarah in equal parts.
