John V. Croxton married Frances R. Quarles on 21 May 1861 in Essex County, Virginia. He was 27 and widowed. She was 18 and single. Both were born in Essex County and lived there. He was a farmer. John V. Croxton served in the 55th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War: Croxton, John V.: Born in Essex Co. Resident of Freeshade. Enl. 7/17/61 in Co. D, as a corporal. Promoted to sergeant, 5/1/62. WIA at Mechanicsville, 6/26/62. Returned ca. fall ’62. On leave, 2/27/63–3/63. Absent, with gastro enteritis, 5/1/63–9/63. Appears to have been wounded at Mine Run as he entered hospital on 11/27/63, suffering from a flesh wound, diarrhoea and debility. Died of chronic diarrhoea and debility at Chimborazo No. 4, 12/9/63.
