John V. Croxton served in the 55th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War: Croxton, John V.: Born in Essex Co. Resident of Freeshade. Enl. 7/17/61 in Co. D, as a corporal. Promoted to sergeant, 5/1/62. WIA at Mechanicsville, 6/26/62. Returned ca. fall ’62. On leave, 2/27/63–3/63. Absent, with gastro enteritis, 5/1/63–9/63. Appears to have been wounded at Mine Run as he entered hospital on 11/27/63, suffering from a flesh wound, diarrhoea and debility. Died of chronic diarrhoea and debility at Chimborazo No. 4, 12/9/63.
