Joseph Armstrong fought in the 55th Virginia infantry during the Civil War: Armstrong, Joseph Ellis: Enl. 5/21/61 in Co. F. Present on all rolls through 6/30/62. Obtained exception from field service on 10/1/62, due to cardiac disease, and was detailed as a Q.M.D. clerk in Richmond for the rest of the war. [Richard O’Sullivan, 55th Virginia Infantry. 1989: H. PERSONALS.—Mr. J. E. Armstrong paid us a visit last Monday. Six weeks ago he was suffering from a dangerous cancer on his face, but under the treatment of a New Orleans specialist it was removed. It is devoutly hoped that the cure will prove permanent. [Tidewater Index, 18 December 1885, page 3.]
