On 16 January 1815, Thomas Gatewood and William Gatewood were bound in the penalty of $30 for Thomas Gatewood’s administration of the goods, chattels and credits of Betsey Gatewood, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 94.]

The will of Thomas Gatewood was written 6 September 1815. Daughter Cordildia Gatewood, not yet 21. Son Henry Gatewood, not yet 21. Signed Thos Gatewood. Witnesses: Sarah her x mark Meadows, Berton his x mark Meadows. Codicil: Thomas Gatewood son of my brother James, and Sally Gatewood daughter of brother Philip Gatewood. Proved 20 November 1815. Bond follows. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 226-227.]

On 20 November 1815, Thomas W. Henley and Henry H. Boughan were boud in the penalty of $600 for Thomas M. Henley’s execution of the last will and testament of Thomas Gatewood, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 228.]

The estate of Thomas Gatewood in account with Thomas M. Henley from 1815 to 1824 was settled on 4 February 1825 by D. W. Pitts, R. Rowzee, and Leod. Sale. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 151–154.]

The estate of Thomas Gatewood in account with Thomas M. Henley from 1824 to 1829 was settled on 30 October 1829 by Ro: Hill, L: C: Gatewood, and Richd. Motley. Includes payment in 1827 for “2067 feet of plank for weather boarding, doors, cornish and winsows for home in Tappahannock,” and also for shingles. The balance due from the executor to the estate was $53.22, which was received and acknowledged by George K. his x mark Smether. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, pages 42–44.]
