John H. Gatewood was mentioned in the 1809 will of his father William F. Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 135–137.]
John was mentioned in the 27 June 1798 will of his grandmother, Mary Gatewood, proved 21 January 1799. “…Item I give unto my Grandson John Henshaw Gatewood one good cow…” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, page 436.]
He may have had a son Thomas Gatewood. A bill of complaint states that William F. Gatewood left a daughter Polly who married John Clarkson, son Philip P., son Leneus C., grandson Thomas. He also had a son John H. who died. He left a widow Sally. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 25, item 25-I-18.]
On 18 November 1816, Sally Gatewood and William Fisher were bound in the penalty of $1,200 for Sally Gatewood’s administration of the estate of John H. Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 340.]
On 7 May 1817, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of John H. Gatewood was made by Geo. Wright and Graves Burke. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 89–90.]
