On 25 October 1793, Elizabeth Gatewood deeded, for and in consideration of natural love and affection, to her six children, namely Betsey, Barnett, John, Edmund, Joseph, and Leonard. All my crop of Corn, Wheat, Tobacco Cotton, Wool, Peas, Leather, Branday, sider, Vinegar, Soap and Tallow. To Daughter Betsey, one Feather Bed and Furniture, and 1 Chest that my Brother Reuben Garnett gave me which my mother had in possession when she died. To daughter Betsey one Side Saddle and bridle, one flowered Counterpain, one Table Cloth, one Testament And Piging, one Pair of Cotton Cards, one Iron Skillet, one Tea Pott, one Milk Pott, one half Dozen Earthen Plates, half Dozen Tea Cups and Saucers, half Dozen Tea Spoons, one Box Iron and heathers, one Flower’d Paiter[?]. To son Barnet one Colt Bought of Steven Ball, one Saddle and Bridle, one Rose Blankett one Case of knives and forks one Case Bottle, one Cross cut Saw and all the Money that Joseph Usher owes me for wheat to his own Proper use. To Son John one Mare Colt, Saddle and Bridle, to his own Proper use. To Son Edmond A Couple of Small Stears to his own Proper use. In in the 1790s, Bernard Gatewood sued for distribution of the estate of his father Joseph after the death of Bernard’s mother Elizabeth: Orators Bernard Gatewood by his next friend Reuben Garnett and Joseph Gatewood and John Gatewood by Reuben Garnett their guardian. That Joseph Gatewood father of your orators died on 14 July 17__ testate. He willed his estate to his wife Eliza during her life and after her death to children Thomas, Susannah (wife of James Cole), Elizabeth, John, Edmund, Leonard since dead and your orators. Elizabeth the widow of Joseph has now died. Some of the children are still infants. Later mentions a “said” Ambrose, apparently another child.
