On 28 October 1845, Achilles Noel filed answer to a bill of complaint exhibited against him in the Curcuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery of Essex County by Isham Griffin. That he denies selling and conveying any quantity of land which he did not have the right to convey. That by deed exhibited, this respondant sold for $505 a certain tract of land ingress, 100 acres that he thought was 105. The small piece—one acre certainly, not 1-1/2 acres—never belonged to the tract. It is true there was an agreement between himself and Fielding S. Crow for the land but no deed. The ingressed land is now in the possession John S. Rowzie, the executor of Fielding S. Crow. The complainant actually tried to purchase this land. Signed Achilles his x mark Noel Sen. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 50, item 50-J-22.]
