In about 1815, orator and oratrix Robert G. Haile and Matilda his wife complained to the justices of King and Queen County. That Edward Wright late of this county died on ____ 1815 intestate leaving the following heirs: Matilda the wife of Robert G. Haile, William A. Wright, and James A. Wright, Mary S. Wright, Edward Wright, David P. Wright and Sally Wright, the said James, Mary, Edward, David and Sally being infants under the age of 21, and Lucinda E. Matthews an infant daughter of Lucinda E. Matthews deceased who was married to William B. Matthews. Administration of the estate of Edward Wright was granted to William A. Wright and William B. Matthews. The land is partly in King and Queen and partly in Essex. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 28, item 28-N-48.]
In 1817, land was divided (whose is not stated) between James C. Roy (James Roy, guardian) and Hugh Campbell. Done by Reuben M. Garnett, Archibald Ritchie, William M. Hutchason and Edward Wright. Recorded 17 June 1817. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 417–418.]
In about 1819, orators and oratrices Edward Wright and David P. Wright infants by William H. Hutchason their next friend and Mary Haile and Emily Haile infants by Robert G. Haile their father and next friend complained to the Chancery Court. That Sally Wright an infant died intestate in 1819. That your orators and William A. Wright are the only brothers of Sally and your oratrices are the only children of a deceased sister. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 42, item 42-G-7.]
A bill of complaint from approximately 1822 states that William Halbert died intestate with fifty acres of land, leaving John Halbert, James Halbert, Thomas Halbert and Mary Gouldman (wife of Richard Gouldman), children of his deceased brother James; Muscoe, Andrew, Alexander, George, William H., and Nelly Newman, Rosey Fora (wife of John Fora), Polly Tucker (wife of William Tucker) and Patsey Divers (wife of William Divers), children of a deceased sister Hannah Newman; William H. Hutchason, Charles Hutchason & Elizabeth Richards (wife of Jno. C. Richards) children of a decased sister Patty Hutchason; William A., Edward and David P. Wright, grandchildren of the said Patty Hutchason, and Mary Haile and Emily Haile (by Robert G. Haile their father), great grandchildren of Patty Hutchason; John Mitchell, Alice Vawter and Nancy Dollins (wife of William Dollins), children of a deceased sister Ann Mitchell; Caty Ingram and John Ingram, grandchildren of Ann Mitchell; John, Edna and Nancy Mitchell, grandchildren of Ann Mitchell; Elizabeth Gatewood, a sister of the said intestate; and Philip Noel, Lucy Hutchason (wife of Jno Hutchason) and Polly Alexander (wife of Robert Alexander), children of a deceased sister Frances Noel. On 4 October 1833, a bill was filed in the case of Cox vs Spindle. Orator John L. Cox administrator of Leonard S. Spindle deceased and in his own right. That the said Leonard S. Spindle intermarried with Eliza the daughter of Barbee Spindle sometime in September 1825. That at the time Barbee Spindle was possessed of an ample fortune, he was but little in debt and owned many valuable slaves, extensive real estate and a water grist mill. That the said Leonard at the time of his marriage or shortly thereafter received of Mordecai Spindle his father and of Barbee Spindle his father-in-law, each, slaves, which he held until his death in early 1832. He listed them as his own slaves with the Commissioner of Revenue and paid their taxes, etc. Leonard joined as security on a bond of Edward Wright. After the death of Leonard judgement was obtained against your orator. Barbee Spindle became in debt and possessed himself of the slaves. Your orator has been able to recover only a very small amount of the assets of Leonard’s estate. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 45, item 45-K-34.]
Edward Wright was mentioned in the 17 June 1834 will of D. W. Pitts, proved 17 July 1837. “I give to Wm A Wright, Edward Wright, David P Wright, Salley Ellis, Johnson W Pitts, Leonard P Sale, Mary L Sale five hundred Dollars each.” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 139–140.]
On 31 July 1834, Edward Wright made purchases at the sale of the estate of Major Arthur L. Barnes. [Essex County, Virignia, Will Book 24, pages 12–20.]
In 1834 (no date recorded), an inventory of the estate of Archibald Ritchie was made by Richd Motley, Edward Wright, and Edmund F Noel, and was ordered recorded on 19 September 1836. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 64–65.]
On 18 January 1836, David P. Wright, W. A. Wright, Edward Wright and William H. Hutchason were bound in the penalty of $17,000 for David P. Wright’s administration with the will annexed of John H. Upshaw. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 449.]
On 17 July 1837, Bevan D. Pitts, Reuben L. Pitts, Edward Wright, Wm. A. Wright, Albert G. Oneale, Lineus C. Gatewood, and David P. Wright were bound in the penalty of $150,000 for Bevan D. Pitts’s administration with the will annexed of the estate of David W. Pitts, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 140.]
On 17 February 1840, Sarah J. Jones, Albert G. Oneale, Edward Wright and Edward Powers were bound in the penalty of $22,000 for Sarah J. Jones’s adminsitration of the estate of James W. Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 446–447.]
