“David P. Wright son of Edward & Polley Wright was born 7th[?] April 1804” [Wright Family Bible, Library of Virginia Archives/Manuscripts Call Number 25314.]

In about 1815, orator and oratrix Robert G. Haile and Matilda his wife complained to the justices of King and Queen County. That Edward Wright late of this county died on ____ 1815 intestate leaving the following heirs: Matilda the wife of Robert G. Haile, William A. Wright, and James A. Wright, Mary S. Wright, Edward Wright, David P. Wright and Sally Wright, the said James, Mary, Edward, David and Sally being infants under the age of 21, and Lucinda E. Matthews an infant daughter of Lucinda E. Matthews deceased who was married to William B. Matthews. Administration of the estate of Edward Wright was granted to William A. Wright and William B. Matthews. The land is partly in King and Queen and partly in Essex. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 28, item 28-N-48.]

In about 1819, orators and oratrices Edward Wright and David P. Wright infants by William H. Hutchason their next friend and Mary Haile and Emily Haile infants by Robert G. Haile their father and next friend complained to the Chancery Court. That Sally Wright an infant died intestate in 1819. That your orators and William A. Wright are the only brothers of Sally and your oratrices are the only children of a deceased sister. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 42, item 42-G-7.]

A bill of complaint from approximately 1822 states that William Halbert died intestate with fifty acres of land, leaving John Halbert, James Halbert, Thomas Halbert and Mary Gouldman (wife of Richard Gouldman), children of his deceased brother James; Muscoe, Andrew, Alexander, George, William H., and Nelly Newman, Rosey Fora (wife of John Fora), Polly Tucker (wife of William Tucker) and Patsey Divers (wife of William Divers), children of a decased sister Hannah Newman; William H. Hutchason, Charles Hutchason & Elizabeth Richards (wife of Jno. C. Richards) children of a decased sister Patty Hutchason; William A., Edward and David P. Wright, grandchildren of the said Patty Hutchason, and Mary Haile and Emily Haile (by Robert G. Haile their father), great grandchildren of Patty Hutchason; John Mitchell, Alice Vawter and Nancy Dollins (wife of William Dollins), children of a deceased sister Ann Mitchell; Caty Ingram and John Ingram, grandchildren of Ann Mitchell; John, Edna and Nancy Mitchell, grandchildren of Ann Mitchell; Elizabeth Gatewood, a sister of the said intestate; and Philip Noel, Lucy Hutchason (wife of Jno Hutchason) and Polly Alexander (wife of Robert Alexander), children of a deceased sister Frances Noel. David P. Wright was mentioned in the 17 June 1834 will of D. W. Pitts, proved 17 July 1837. “I give to Wm A Wright, Edward Wright, David P Wright, Salley Ellis, Johnson W Pitts, Leonard P Sale, Mary L Sale five hundred Dollars each.” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 139–140.]

On 18 January 1836, David P. Wright, W. A. Wright, Edward Wright and William H. Hutchason were bound in the penalty of $17,000 for David P. Wright’s administration with the will annexed of John H. Upshaw. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 449.]

On 17 July 1837, Bevan D. Pitts, Reuben L. Pitts, Edward Wright, Wm. A. Wright, Albert G. Oneale, Lineus C. Gatewood, and David P. Wright were bound in the penalty of $150,000 for Bevan D. Pitts’s administration with the will annexed of the estate of David W. Pitts, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 140.]

On 18 October 1837, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of William L. Latane was made by Ro: G Haile, William Cox, and D. P. Wright. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 248–250.]

On 20 September 1839, William H Tennent and William Huggins were bound unto David P Wright the sum of $12,000. The condition of this obligation is such that this day David P Wright hath delivered and paid to William H Tennent and William Huggins the estate of John H Upshaw to which the said Tennent and Huggins are entitled in right of their wives Lucy B and Elizabeth H, daughters of the said John H Upshaw. If Tennent and Huggins shall pay to David P Wright any claims which become due, then this obligation to be void. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 417–418.]

David P. Wright was mentioned in the 18 July 1841 will of his father-in-law Thomas Pitts. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 40, item 40-C-26.]

In about 1841, orators and oratrices Stephen D. Pitts and Anne his wife, who is a daughter of the late Major Thomas Pitts, Richard H. Pitts, and Fenelon Augustus Pitts complained that Major Thomas Pitts died in ____ testate. David P. Wright was named executor of the estate. The negroes were to be divided among all children to wit, Anne (wife of Stephen D. Pitts), Mary E. (wife of the said David P. Wright), Richard H. Pitts, and Fenelon Augustus Pitts (his grandson) as trustee for the benefit of himself and the other children of Davis Pitts, a son of Thomas Pitts. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 40, item 40-C-28.]

On 7 September 1842, orator Augustine Owen of the County of Middlesex complained to the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Essex County. That one Stephen D. Pitts is indebted to him $228.78 with interest from 1 January 1839. That Stephen D. Pitts has removed without the limits of the Commonwealth to the State of Louisiana. Reubin L. Pitts Esq. as agent and attorney for Stephen D. Pitts received from David P. Wright Esq. Executor of Thomas Pitts deceased late of Essex County two negro slaves allotted to Stephen D. Pitts in right of his wife Ann through the will of her father Thomas Pitts. One was called Nessee and was hired to Rix Jordan, and the other, Catharine, was hired to John C. Browne. Filed as Owen vs. Pitts. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 51, item 51-G-14.]

On 7 September 1842, orators William McDonald, Samuel McDonald and George M. Richardson merchants trading as Wiliam McDonald & Co. complained to the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Essex County. That they trade wholesale in Baltimore in the State of Maryland. Stephen D. Pitts is indebted $1,690.16 with interest from 28 December 1839. He left the State of Virginia several years ago. Your orators are informed that Reubin L. Pitts Esq. agent and attorney has two negro slaves received of David P. Wright Esq., executor of Thomas Pitts late of Essex County, of which Stephen D. Pitts has an interest in right of his wife Ann, daughter of Thomas Pitts. That the negroes have been hired out. Filed as McDonald & Co vs. Pitts. On 4 November 1842, David P. Wright executor of Thomas Pitts answered a bill exhibited against him by Augustine Owen. It is true he did deliver the two slaves in 1841. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 51, item 51-G-18.]

On 4 November 1842, David P. Wright executor of Thomas Pitts deceased answered a bill by William McDonald, Samuel McDonald and George W. Richardson merchants. He did deliver to R. L. Pitts attorney for Stephen D. Pitts the two slaves mentioned in the bill. Dated 4 November 1842. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 51, item 51-I-7.]
