On 15 December 1800, Elizabeth B. Allen, William Latane and a John Jones were bound $20,000 for Elizabeth B. Allen’s execution of the last will and testament of Thomas Allen. Signed Elizabeth her X mark Allen, WLatane, John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, page 50.]
John Jones was mentioned in the 27 February 1805 will of his brother Richard Jones. John, along with his brother Coleman, was to receive a Negro girl Ann. A John Jones witnessed the will. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 385–387.]
On 16 September 1805, Coleman Jones and John Jones were bound in the penalty of $5,000 for Coleman Jones’s executorship of the estate of Richard Jones, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, page 382.]
In 1817, a John Jones plt complained of Thomas Dix deft in custody &c of a plea of trespass. For that the deft did, on the __ day of ____ 1816 at the county aforesaid with force and arms enter into the clo[illegible] of the plt then [illegible] and then and there with force and arms to wit with whips, sticks & fists did assault, beat wound & ill treat a negro man slave named James the property of the plt.
