On 17 September 1832, Johannes Huhn was born in Asbach, Baden, to Margaretha Huhn, and was baptized on 23 September 1832. [Family History Library film 1189294.]
In 1852, on the ship A. Cheesebrough sailing from Liverpool, Margaret Huhn, age 44, spinster, arrived in Baltimore Maryland, with child John, age 19, shoemaker, and child Susanna, age 14, servant. Each was accompanied by one chest. All were of Ashburg, Baden, and intended to settle in Baltimore, Maryland. Many other residents of Ashburg were on the ship, with most intending to settle in Baltimore. On 6 October 1854, John Huhn applied for U.S. naturalization at the Circuit Court Office in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a native of Baden, currently residing in the City of Baltimore. [Maryland, Federal Naturlization Records, 1795–1931.]
On 14 August 1862, John Huhn was mustered into the Union Army for a period of three years as a private in Captain Suter’s Co., 4th Regiment Maryland Infantry, age 29 years. He was absent sick beginning 1 September 1862 and returned present on the rolls in January 1863. On 16 August 1863, he was listed as sick at the General Hospital in Washington, D.C., and he continued to be listed sick through the end of the war, and was mustered out on 31 May 1865.
