On 19 May 1724, James Adkins and Elizabeth his wife late Elizabeth Fisher of the County of Essex leased to Edward Clark of the same. For 5 shillings, all their right and title to a tract of Land which was given by Majr James Boughan deced to James Boughan junr his Son & the said Elizabeth Adkins party to these prsents by deed bearing date the 2d day of April in the year of our Lord 1706 situated in parish of St Anne & County of Essex upon the branches of Occupacea Creek, for a during the term of one whole year. On 19 May 1724, James Atkins & Elizabeth his wife late Elizabeth Fisher released to Edward Clarke. For 1,000 pounds of Tobacco, the property leased the same day. Signed James Atkins, Eliza. Atkins. On 21 July 1731, “On the motion of Elizabeth Atkins ye wife of James Atkins complaining that her said husband is a runagate takes no manner of care to provide any subsistance for this family & humbly pray this Court to allow her a seperate maintainance, It is therefore ordered that the said Elizabeth shall have that she shall earn by her labour for her seperate maintainance.” [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 1729–1733, page 171.]
