On 15 November 1792, The Virginia Herald, and Fredericksburg Advertiser ran an announcement that William Luttrell, William Omohundro and James Clark, all of Westmoreland County, had deserted from Fredricksburg. [Robert K. Headley, Jr., Genealogical Abstracts from 18th-Century Virginia Newspapers, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1987, page 99.]

In 1794–1795, William Luttrell was taxed for one levy at 51-1/2 cents. [Westmoreland County, Sheriff’s Tax Book 1794–1795.]

On 10 July 1799, an inventory of the cash and bonds of the estate of Fleet Cox, deceased, was made, which included a 5 November 1795 bond (or possibly several bonds) of £49.58 from William Luttrell, Danl Sandford & others with interest from 5 November 1795 to 1 May 1820 of £70.6. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Records and Inventories 11, pages 34–37.]

On 19 December 1800, the estate of William Hutt in account with Thomas Hutt, executor, recorded a payment of 18 shillings from William Luttrell, apparently for sales from the estate. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Records and Inventories 10, pages 91–98.]

On 24 August 1801, it was ordered that the Overseers of the Poor in Cople Parish bind out according to law Fanny Littrill and Elizabeth Littrill, orphans of William Littrill deceased. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Order Book 1801–04, page 136.]

NOTE — There has been considerable confusion about where this William Luttrell fits into the Luttrell line, with many researchers confusing this William with another. (And confusing his daughter Fanny with Frances, the daughter of the other William.) Here are some notes I posted in 1999 on a Luttrell message board:

Hello. I can now shed some more light on this:

> Children of WILLIAM LUTTRELL and ELIZABETH MARMADUKE are:
> i. JAMES B.22 LUTTRELL, b. Abt. 1796.
> ii. FANNY LUTTRELL, b. 1797; m. SAMUEL DAVIS.
> iii. JOHN M. LUTTRELL, b. Abt. 1798; d. Abt. 1831.
> iv. WILLIAM R. LUTTRELL.
> Maybe this William R. Luttrell m. Lorinda Q. Marmaduke
> 3/21/1835 and not his father?? Juanita

Part of what has been confusing (to me, and, I'm certain, others!) is that it turns out there was a William Luttrell in Westmoreland County, Virginia who died about 1801 leaving a daughter Fanny, and a William Luttrell in Westmoreland who died about 1815 leaving a daughter Frances. These are not the same people, which I've determined by examination of the personal property tax records in Westmoreland.

Fanny, daughter of the William who died in 1801, married Samuel Davis in Westmoreland in 1816; Frances, the daughter of the William who died in 1815, I lose track of after 1821.

Here are some records on Fanny (and her sister Elizabeth, both of whom must have been very young when their father died in 1801 -- Fanny was born about 1797):

On 24 August 1801, it was ordered that the Overseers of the Poor in Cople Parish bind out according to law Fanny Littrill and Elizabeth Littrill, orphans of William Littrill deceased. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Order Book 1801-04, page 136.]

The above determines that a William Luttrell died in or before 1801, leaving these two children.

In 1814, Miss Fanny Luttrell was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. "Derived by Deceas [sic] of Mother" [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1814 Land Tax Book.]

I have not yet determined who the mother was who died in our before 1814, but both Fanny and Elizabeth received 12 acres.

In 1815, Miss Fanny Luttrell was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1815 Land Tax Book.]

In 1816, Miss Fanny Luttrell was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1816 Land Tax Book.]

On 27 October 1816, Fanny Luttrel gave consent to marry Samuel Davis. On 2 November 1816, Samuel Davis and Simon Robinson took out a marriage bond, stating that a marriage to Fanny Luttrell was soon intended. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Marriage Register 7, items 16-34 and 16-34a.]

In 1817, Miss Fanny Luttrell was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1817 Land Tax Book.]

In 1818, Fanny Luttrell Sen was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1818 Land Tax Book.]

In 1819, Fanny Luttrell Senr was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1819 Land Tax Book.]

In 1820, Fanny Luttrell Sen was taxed for 6 acres in Westmoreland County. This land was in Cople Parish and bordered that of Travis McGuire, located 4 miles southeast from the courthouse. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1820 Land Tax Book.]

By this time, Frances Luttrell -- who is identified for clarity in the tax records as Frances Luttrell Junior -- also appears, with considerably more real estate gained from the death of her father William Luttrell in 1815.

Some researchers (apparently citing Glenna Deal's research) have stated that the father of William Luttrell who died in 1801 married Mary McGuire of neighboring Richmond County. This is interesting, especially given the proximity of McGuire lands to those of William (d. 1801), but I have never found any supporting evidence in Westmoreland or Richmond.

What Glenna Deal suggests is that the William who died in 1801 was the son of William who lived from about 1740 to about 1815, and that the elder William married thrice: to Mary McGuire about 1776 in Richmond County, and then much later (but not implausibly) to Elizabeth Marmaduke and to Keziah Marmaduke (who became administrator of his estate). The marriages to the Marmadukes seem substantiated through records, but not the earlier one (McGuire) to my knowledge. Moreover, William (d. 1815) died intestate, and his estate went entirely to his children by Elizabeth (James B. and John M.) and to Keziah, the mother of children Frances (the younger) and William R. Luttrell.

So if the William who died in 1815 did have a marriage to Mary McGuire (leaving a son William, d. 1801 and his heirs) prior to those with Elizabeth Marmaduke and Keziah Marmaduke, why are there no distributions to the heirs of the William who died in 1801? True, they could have sold the rights to their shares, but Fanny and Elizabeth Luttrell don't seem to have had the financial well-being that the other Luttrell offspring discussed here had -- probably we would have seen an improvement in their condition. And if they were bound out as orphans to the overseers of the poor in 1801, why did their grandfather William (d. 1815) or other family not petition for their guardianship? So I'm not convinced that the William who died in 1801 leaving Fanny and Elizabeth is the son of the William who died in 1815.

That Keziah is the mother of Frances and William is supported in part by the following:

28 November 1815: "On the motion of Keziah Lutterell widow & adminx of William Lutterell decd she is appointed Guardian of Francis Lutterell & William Lutterell orphans of the said William Lutterell decd..." [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Orders 1814-1818, p. 195]

The estate of William Luttrell (d. 1815) was settled on 23 December 1819, with distributions to his widow, two children for whom the widow was guardian, and John and James Luttrell. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Inventories and Accounts 10, 1815-1820, pp. 456-457.]
