In an undated petition, Drury Croxton sued for divorce, “that on the 18th day of April 1878 he was duly married to one George Anna Brush as will appear by reference to an official copy of the marriage license herewith filed marked “A,” prayed to be read as a part of this bill. Your orator further shows that his said wife has proved recreant to her marriage vows, and has again and again during the last two years been guilty of the crime of adultery and thus forfeited her right to remain the wedded wife of your orator, and by the law both of God and man he has a right to be released from the bond of matrimony with her. That your orator is a resident of Essex county in the state of Virginia, as is also the said George Anna Croxton. That your orator has not cohabited with his said wife since his knowledge of the fact of adultery on her part. That of the issue of this marriage there is an only child, a boy of [blank] years now in the custody of your orator.” [Essex County, Virginia, Loose Papers, Library of Virginia.]

In 1889, Georganna Croxton petitioned the Circuit Court of King and Queen County, Virginia, for a divorce from Drury Croxton. “Humbly complaining showeth unto your Honor that your Oratrix Georganna Croxton wife of Drury Croxton who sues by John R Mitchell her next friend, that she was legally married to Drury Croxton in April 1878 as may be more fully seen by refference to the Clerks copy of the marriage license which is herewith filed, makred “A” and prayed to be read as part of this bill That she lived in King and Queen County as a loving and deoved wife with the said Drury Croxton until 1881 at which time without any cause of which your oratrix is cognizant he the said Drury Croxton wilfully deserted and abandoned your oratrix and since that time has never returned to her, but has left her to her own exertions to support herself and her children of which he was father and natural guardian”. Depositions support Georgeanna’s residency in King and Queen County. Drury Croxton does not seem to have answered the complaint. The court issued a decree of divorce on 12 November 1890.
