NEWPORT NEWS - Richard Arlen Verlander passed away on December 20, 2012 at the age of 76. He was born October 12, 1936 in Newport News, VA to Richard Edward and Sadie Lee Verlander. He grew up in Hilton Village and attended Hilton Baptist Church. He attended Warwick High School (Class of 1956), VA Tech, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Christopher Newport College. He married his high school sweetheart Marguerite Freeze in 1960. Richard?s career was with General Electric Company as a Field Service Representative. He gained a love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors from his father and shared this past time with other family members and friends. Richard is survived by Marguerite Verlander; son, Richard A. Verlander II; daughter, Lisa Faye Verlander; sisters, Joan Bower and Maxine Singley (George). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. The family will receive friends for a visitation from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A chapel service will follow with Rev. Lynwood Wells officiating, and a private burial following at Peninsula Memorial Park.
