The will of George Skelton was dated 3 September 1839. To beloved wife Peggy Skelton as long as she remains a widow the entire of estate both real and personal, “to be managed by her in any manner from which she may devise profit or advantage agreeably to her discretion, having entire confidence in her prudence in the education and management of my Children.” After her decease or marriage, estate to be divided equally between my four children, namely Agnes, Eliza-Jane, Maria-Louisa, and George Washington Skelton. Wife to be sole executor.

Proved 18 November 1839 by the oaths of all three witnesses. Certificate of probate given to Peggy Skelton, having entered into a bond of $10,000 with Thomas N. Clarke her security.

On 18 November 1839, Peggy Skelton and Thomas N. Clarke were bound in the penalty of $2,000 for Peggy Skelton’s execution on the estate of George Skelton, deceased. Signed Peggy her x mark Skelton. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 428.]
