The estate of Carter Lumpkin, deceased, in account with Thomas N. Clarke, administrator, from 1838 to 1839 was ordered recorded 18 May 1840. Accounts state that Carter Lumpkin left four children at his death, and that John Thomas Lumpkin died in 1838, with remaining legacies to Lewis R Lumpkin, Robert M Lumpkin, Susan A Lumpkin, and to Zebulon M P Carter in right of his wife Fras D for her dower. On 13 March 1841, Henry H. Boughan, as coroner for Essex County, led an inquisition taken at the public highway near Mrs. Elizabeth B. Allen’s (deceased) into the death of Henry, a slave the property of Mrs. Elizabeth Hundley, then and there lying dead. A jury consisting of James Semple, M G Wood, Jas Durham, John J Wright, Henry Crow, Z. M. P. Carter, Baylor W Hill, Johnson Games, Philip Coleman, Willis Brooks, Caleb A Noel and Wm S Croxton state that Henry came to his death on the 12th Day of March, that he had no marks of violence, and died by being chilled to death. On 18 March 1844, Zebulon M. P. Carter and Richard J. Muse were bound $2,000 for Zebulon M. P. Carter’s administration of the estate of Lewis Walden, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 25, page 226.]
On 7 June 1847, Z. M. P. Carter, Caston Boughan, and John T Boughan witnessed the will of Letty Dunn, and on 17 January 1848, all three proved the will in court. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 26, pages 245–246.]
