The will of Reuben Brooke was dated 18 July 1812. To Ann Dunn, the widow of John Dunn. To my grandson Reuben Brooke Boughton. Ann Dunn’s two children Henry Dunn and Katy Hart. My daughter Elizabeth Brooke. To Alce [sic] Boughton and Joshua Boughton. My daughter Patty Marshall. Joshua Boughton and James Dunn to be executors. Signed Reuben his x mark Brooke. On 21 March 1814, Joseph Janey and Henry Young Senior were bound in the penalty of $12,000 for Joseph Janey’s administration with the will annexed of the goods, chattels and credits of Reuben Broocks, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 8.]
On 29 March 1814, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Reuben Brooke, deceased, was made by Kemp Gatewood, Francis Smith, and W. Blake. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 30.]
On 30 March 1814, a division of the slaves of the estate of Reuben Brooke was made by Kemp Gatewood, Francis Smith, and W. Blake with lots to Miss Betsy Brooke, Mrs. Patsey Marshall, and Mr. Joshua Boughton and Alice his wife. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 35–36.]
The estate of Reuben Broocke in account with Joseph Janey, administrator, for 1814 was settled on 14 August 1817 by Jno. Trible, Francis Smith, and Kemp Gatewood, and returned to court on 16 December 1817. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 462–463.]
