The will of James Clark of the County of Essex and Parish of Saint Ann was dated 4 June 1809. Loving wife Salley Clark to be executrix. Four daughters Judith Rouse, Susannah Noell, Lucy Clark, and Elizabeth Clark. Son James Clark, not of age. Signed James Clark. Witnesses: Ritchie Clark, William Fisher, Pheby her + mark Gouldman. Proved on 18 December 1809. Salley Clark relinquishes right of executorship. On motion of William Rouse, a certificate is granted him in order to his obtaining letters of administration with the will annexed, he having acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $3,300 with Alexander Noel and Robert Parker his securities. On 18 December 1809, William Rouse, Alexander Noel, and Robert Parker were bound in the penalty of $3,300 for William Rouse’s administration with the will annexed of the goods, chattels and credits of James Clark, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 140–141.]

On 28 December 1809, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of James Clarke, deceased, was made by J. Sale, Wm Noel, B. Spindle, and Parmenus Pilkinton and ordered recorded on 15 October 1810. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 240–241.]

The estate of James Clarke, deceased, in account with William Rouse, administrator, from 1809 to 1813 was settled on 5 January 1813 by Robert Hill, Barbee Spindle, and Parmenus Pilkinton. Includes in 1813 “Legacy to be paid James Clarke when he comes of age”. Returned to court 20 September 1819. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 64–66.]
