On 19 July 1802, a settlement of the estate of James Durham, deceased, in account with Catherine Durham, widow, was submitted to court by Edward Ware, Chs. Howerton, and Twyman Greenwood. Expenses starting 31 October 1800 include 15 shillings “To paid Roger Shackelford for making coffin”. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 152–153.]
The will of Roger Shackelford of the County of Essex and State of Virginia was dated 24 November 1829. Sick but of sound mind and memory. Daughter Rebecker Newbuild and her husband Richd Newbuild, land lying in King & Queen County. Son Carter Shackelford. Son James Shackelford, not married. Son Robt. Shackelford. Daughters Nancy and Marthy. Sons Carter and Robt to be executors. No signature, but witnessed by Richd Miller, Ophelia B. Evans, and Frances her x mark Miller. Proved 21 December 1829. On 21 December 1829, Robert T. Shackelford, Nancy Shackelford, Martha Shackelford, Rebecca Newbill, and Carter Shackelford were bound in the penalty of $9,000 for Robert T. Shackelford’s executorship of the estate of Roger Shackelford. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 36.]
