Burton Gray was mentioned in the 21 January 1803 will of his grandfather, John Spindle, proved on 16 December 1805. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 397–398.]
On 6 December 1823, Thomas D Pitts, James Rennolds, William Gray and Birkett Gray were bound unto Barbee Spindle administrator of Philip Gray who was trustee of Martha Gray deceased $430.00. “The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Thomas D Pitts James Rennolds, William Gray and Birkett Gray have received their respective part of the said Martha Grays estate which the Chancery Court of Fredericksburg have decreed to the above named parties — Now if the above bound Pitts, Rennolds and Grays shall exonerate and bear harmless the sd. Barbee Spindle as aforesaid against all claims that may hereafter come … then the above obligation to the void …” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 236–237.]
On 17 April 1826, William Gray, James Rennolds and William Blackburn were bound in the penalty of $20,000 for William Gray’s execution of the last will and testament of Birkett Gray. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 380.]
The will of Birkett Gray of the County of Essex and St. Ann’s Parish was dated 15 February 1822. To sister Molly Pitts and Thomas Daniel Pitts her husband and to her children. To sister Martha Rennolds and James Rennolds her husband and to her children. To my brother William Gray and his children. Brother William Gray to be executor. Signed Birkett Gray.
