Mary Gray was mentioned in the 21 January 1803 will of her grandfather, John Spindle, proved on 16 December 1805. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 397–398.]

On 15 March 1817, James Rennolds and Thomas D. Pitts were bound unto Barbee Spindle £3,000. “The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a full settlement division and distribution has been made of the estate of John Spindle decd. and Philip Gray decd. and that the same James Rennolds and Thomas D Pitts in right of their wives has received of Barbee Spindle who was Executor and trustee under the sd John Spidles will and administrator to Philip Gray decd. also guardian to his two daughters Martha and Mary who intermarried with the above James Rennolds and Thomas D Pitts their full proportion of both estates except as to a claim they have to the hires of some negroes now in suit that formerly belonged to Martha Gray decd. — Now if the said James Rennolds & Thomas D Pitts and their wives do make to the said Barbee Spindle a good right and title in fee simple to the Land that belonged to John Spindle decd. that they had an interest in and pays their true proportion of any lawfull claims that may be brought against either of the estates, with costs &c then the above obligation to be void…” Ordered recorded on 19 September 1825. Mary Gray and her husband Thomas Daniel Pitts were mentioned in the 15 February 1822 will of her brother, Birkett Gray, proved 17 April 1826. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 382–383.]
