Lewis Brown was mentioned in the 23 March 1808 will of his father, Merriday Brown, proved 19 December 1808. To son Lewis Brown all the residue of my land, and also stock of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, furniture. To sons Edward, Daniel, and Lewis, and to daughter Polly, to be equally divided among them, all my negroes excepting the negroe girl Nan, but it is to be understood that a negroe girl I formerly gave to my son Edward named Dinah and a negro girl named Mary which I formerly gave to my son Daniel shall be considered apart of the aforesaid slaves. Sons Daniel and Lewis Brown to be executors. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 95–96.]

On 19 December 1808, Daniel Brown, Lewis Brown, Benjamin H Munday and Leonard Sale were bound in the penalty of $15,000 for Daniel Brown’s and Lewis Brown’s executorship of the estate of Merriday Brown, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, page 96.]

The estate of Merriday Brown in account with Daniel & Lewis Brown, executors, from 1808 to 1810 was ordered recorded 16 July 1810. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 203–204.]

On 30 December 1808, the slaves of the estate of Merriday Brown were divided into four equal lots, to Polly Browne, Edward B Browne, Lewis Browne, and Danl. Browne. Ordered recorded 16 July 1810. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, page 204.]

The will of Lewis Brown of the County of Essex was dated 6 October 1824. To wife all estate until my son Richard Lewis arrives at the age of twenty one or marries, and then one half to go to him, and the other half to be retained by my wife, until her death when all estate to Richard Lewis. Various provisions in the case of an additional child or children. Wife to be executrix, and she should qualify without giving security. Signed Lewis Brown. Witnesses: James Hunter, Joseph B. Brown. On 16 January 1826, Catharine N. Brown was bound in the penalty of $10,000 for her executrixship of the estate of Lewis Brown, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 293.]

On 14 March 1826, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Lewis Brown was made by Wm Garnet, Thos. L. Oneale, and Richard Rowzee. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 368–369.]

On 17 March 1828, David W Pitts, William A Wright and Reuben L Pitts were bound in the penalty of $20,000 for David W. Pitts’s administration de bonis non with the will annexed of Lewis Brown, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, pages 300–301.]

On 18 November 1828, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Lewis Brown, deceased, was made by Richard Rowzee, Larkin Noel and Thos. L. Oneale. States that the estate was unadministered by Catharine N. Brown, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, pages 160–163.]
