John Cauthorn was mentioned in the 18 July 1814 will of his mother, Catherine Cauthorn, proved 17 April 1815. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 143–144.]
On 20 October 1823, Amos Cauthorn, Peter B. Davis and James Cauthorn were bound in the penalty of $1,000 for Amos Cauthorn’s administration of the estate of John Cauthorn, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 415.]
The estate of John Cauthorn, deceased, in account with Amos Cauthorn, administrator, from 1823 to 1825 was ordered recorded 16 May 1825. Includes “paid Peter Trible for tuition of Reuben Cauthorns Orphans”, “paid Leroy Cauthorn Guardian of Ophelia Cauthorn”, “paid Kemp Gatewood Guardian for Mary Ann Ursery on an obligation under seal”. The estate is possibly insolvent, as there is possibly not enough to cover debts and to pay “Meredith M. Edmunds for balance purporting to be due to him in right of his wife, who before her intermarriage was Polly Cauthorn and orphan of Reuben Cauthorn decd. on settlement of John Cauthorns Guardianship acct.” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 170–173.]
