The will of Barton Meador of the County of Essex and State of Virginia was dated 18 September 1837. In perfect health and mind. I lend to Vincent Gordon my Nephew all lands, and to his heirs if he has any, but if not then it should go to my sister Elizabeth Hammons during her life and then to her children. I lend to my two sisters Elizabeth Hammons and Catharine Brooks all my personal estate during their lives, and then to the children of my Sister Elizabeth. My Friend Mourning Johnston to be executor. Signed Barton Meador. Witnesses: Churchill Brizendine, James Phillips, Mourning Johnston. On 19 February 1838, proved by Churchill Brizendine and James Phillips. On 19 February 1838, Mourning Johnston and James Phillips were bound in the penalty of $2,400 for Mourning Johnston’s execution of the will of Barton Meador, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 251.]
