In May 1692 [date damaged], “Thomas Taylor Servant to Thomas Saint John, is adjudged Eleven years of age, Its therefore ordered that he Serve According to Law”. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 1692–95, page 2.]

On 9 March 1693/4, John Boughan upon bringing his accon against Thomas St. John declares that the said Saint John Standeth indebted to him in the Sume of five hundred and fifty pounds of Sweet Sented tobacco and Caske by accot. and refuseth payment wherefore he prayed order for present payment with Cost of Suit &c. unto which the defendt. appear’d and offering one hundred and thirty pounds of tobacco in discount of the Said debt this Court have granted Judgment to the plaintiff for four hundred and twenty pounds of Sweet Sented tobacco being the ballance due to the paid with Cost of Suit Alt Exo: [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 1692–95, page 167.]

In the name of God Amen I Thomas St: John of ye parish of SouthFarnham & County of Rappa: being Sick & weak of Body but of Sound & perfect mind & memory praise be therefore given to ye Almighty God I do make & ordaine this my present last Will & Tesment: in manner & Forme following that is to say first & principally I comend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God hopeing that I may obtaine life everlasting I do comitt my Body to ye earth & to be bered at ye discretion of my Exer hereafter first I will that all Just debts & funerall Charge shall be paid & discharged.
Item I give & bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Coopar a young Mare of a year old with her increase for ever
Item I give & bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth Coopar ye benefit of Land to worke upon whare hur Husband Wm: Cooper is now abilding dureing her life time & to have as much priveleg for Tiber or aney thing eless as tho the land ware hur one duaring her life time
likewise my Will is that all my Land that I am now possessed with to be equealy devided between my Sons Thomas St: John Junr: & William St: John I do likewise make them both at age at Eaighten years if there Mother should decease or Marrey but if not to abide while ye Age of one & twenty
I do give & bequeath unto Richd Covington Ten Shelings to boy him a Ring
lastly I give & bequeath unto Wife Mary St: John all ye rest & remaing part of my Estate both movables & unmovables dureing hur life time provided that she shall keep herselfe a widoo & not marrey & after my wifes desese to be eaqually devided amoung all my Cheldren but if my Wife Should Marrey then my will is that Shee Should have but ye thurd part of my Easeteat & ye other to be devided amoung my Cheldren I do lifewise make my wife my hole Exex over my hole Esteat both pasnall & Reiall In witness whereof I the said Thomas St: John to this my last Will & Testament have hereunto Set my hand & Seale this Tenth day of october one thousand six hundred & ninety. On 10 September 1698, Mary St John and Richd Covington were bound 20,000 pounds of good scented tobacco and caske for Mary St John’s execution of the last will and testament of Thomas St John, deceased.
