According to Carl Thomas Moore, it was August Thomas who copied the information from the Wohlmuthausen Church books. Speaking of Carl Michael Thomas, he said: “Carl Michael Thomas came from Germany with a church record of Thomas family going back for 8 generations or so into early years. Record was copied by my grand father's brother August Thomas.”

On 21 October 1930, August Thomas wrote a letter addressed to “Dear Brother & Family” from his home at 701 Blair Avenue, Hampton, Virginia. He writes: Received Ednas last letter and was really ashamed not having written so long. Surely thought we had told you that on the 1st of Oct a yer ago we rented our home on Versailles one and mooved [sic] to Newport News to live with Ruth. The reason for this was that the Burk Hume Piano Co. sold out and business being so dul was afraid on account of my age to carry on by ourself. But mooving to a new place where I was not known has made it very hard for me. Since April this year have beeen with the firm Sealeys Inc. on 34st [sic] & Washington selling Radios & Frigedair Not able to do much just about make enough to pay half of the house hold expenses. There is still 45000 lone on the home and the 55.00 rent per month goes towards taxes interest on loan and curtailment so we don’t get anything for that source. Had a bad cold about a month ago which left me very deaf. Doctor has been working on me every since and it is only slightly better. It frightens me to think what will become of Mamie and I if I should become unable to work, as all of our saving are tied up in property in Norfolk for which we are not able to realize a cent at this time. Paid 1500.00 for a lot at Virginia Beach 4 years ago have been offering same for 900.00 but cant find anyone to take it Well this is enough of our hard luck story and will say that I have been awfull anxious to come to Balto to see you, but just havent got the money as I have to work on a commission basis and some weeks make nothing at all. Would love so much to spend a few days with Carl and all of you and only hope that the comming Christmas season will give me a chance to earn a little extra. Carl our trouble is Ruth married a man who absolutely hates Mamie & I and refuses to do a thing for us. What would become of us If I became unable to work we do not know. Ruth is a sweet dutyfull daughter but she is not able to manage him. We find we made a sad mistake when we gave up our home and mooved over here. Our son in law ownes about half interest in a bakery here and employ about 20 men. We have asked him time and again to give me something to do in the Bakery but his answer is “We have nothing that he can do. Mamie has to work so hard about the house it nearly breaks me hart to see her diggin from early morning until late at night Now please do not write anything I have said to our address at home as Ruth always wants to read your letters. Anything you say and do not wants them to see use address on card enclosed Our home address is 701 Blair ave Hampton Va Love to all from Mamie & self, Hope our bad luck will end soon
