The death certificate of Mary’s son, Peter Thomas Campbell, states that Mary was born in Caroline County, Virginia. [Commonweath of Virginia, Certificate of Death 13308.]

On 25 May 1900, Mary E. Campbell of Millers Tavern, Essex County, stated in a Confederate pension application that she and her husband Peter T. Campbell, who served in Company F, 55th Virginia Regiment, were married in Caroline County, Virginia, in 1857. [Essex County, Virginia, Loose Confederate Records (boxed).]

On 17 March 1858, a deed was made from Thomas Croxton, Commissioner, acting under a decree, sold to Peter T. Campbell and Mary E. his wife and from them sold to John L. Boughton. Whereas at a sale made by Thomas Croxton, commissioner, land was purchased by Peter Campbell amounting to 27-1/2 acres of arable land and 13-1/2 acres of woodland, and whereas a deed for the same was never made, and whereas Peter Campbell and Mary E. his wife have sold the woodland to Boughton, this deed therefore acknowledges the sales. On 29 April 1858, Peter Campbell and Mary E. his wife sold to John S. Boughton. For $1,060, a tract called Stumans that the said Campbell bought of Mrs. Elizabeth Shepherd. On 20 August 1869, Peter T. Campbell and Mary his wife sold to Wm H. Campbell, all of Essex County. For $250, 30 acres mostly of woodland, part of a tract on which Peter Campbell resides, in trust for the benefit of Eliza Campbell the wife of Wm H. Campbell during her life and after her death for the benefit of the issue of Eliza and William Campbell, not to be liable for any debt of William H. Campbell. Signed Peter T. Campbell, Mary C. On 21 April 1873, Mary E. Campbell, Joseph Mann, John H. Kidd and William I (or J) Haile were bound $4,000 for Mary’s administration of estate of Peter T. Campbell deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 29, page 318.]

On 5 December 1874 an account of the estate of Peter T. Campbell from 21 April 1873 to 22 April 1874, by Mary E. Campbell, was recorded. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 29, pages 516–519.]

On 19 November 1888, a deed was executed between Mary E. Campbell, Justin Derieux, Mollie M. Derieux, Peter T. Campbell and W. L. Campbell of the first part, H. W. Daingerfield trustee of the second part, and T. R. B. Wright of the third part. Whereas the parties of the first part have borrowed $60 of the said T. R. B. Wright and desire to secure him harmless, they sell the timber on a tract of land of which Peter T. Campbell died seized amounting to 146 acres more or less from the case of Owen v. Campbell. On 26 May 1890, Peter T. Campbell and Millie A. Campbell his wife, Willie L. Campbell and Lula C. Campbell his wife, Justin Derieux and Mollie E. Derieux his wife, and Mary E. Campbell widow of Peter T. Campbell sold to James E. Rogers. 66 acres bounded by J. M. Owen, Joseph Cauthorn, the lands of Peter T. Campbell deceased, Jas H. Taylor deceased, it being a portion of the land Peter T. Campbell died possessed of. Signed P T Campbell, M A Campbell, W L Campbell, L C Campbell, Justin Derieux, M E Derieux, M E Campbell. On 25 May 1893, Mary E. Campbell, Willie L. Campbell and Lula K. Campbell his wife, Justin Derieux and Mollie E. Derieux his wife gave to Peter T. Campbell. For “natural love and affection we bear towards Peter T. Campbell”, part of the land of the late Peter T. Campbell, 59 acres more or less, bounded by the lands of the late J. D. Hutchinson, the county road, and the late J. H. Taylor. Signed M. E. Campbell, W. L. Campbell, L. K. Campbell, Justin Derieux, M. E. Derieux. Ordered recorded 19 June 1893. On 2 November 1876, complainant John M. Owen sued on behalf on himself and all other creditors of Peter T. Campbell deceased. The distributees and heirs of Peter T. Campbell are: Mary E. Campbell his widow, and children Thomas Campbell, William Campbell and Mary E. Campbell. Thomas is above 14; William and Mary are under 14. There is an answer of the children by James Roy Micou stating that they are of very tender years, etc. The answer of Mary E. Campbell states that Peter T. Campbell died in April 1873. “She is in very limited circumstances, with three children, two of whom are quite young and almost uneducated”.
