Documentation
The estate of Joshua Boughton in account with Joseph Janey from 1817 to 1819 was settled on 21 June 1819 by Philip Mann, Anthony Hayes, and Kemp Gatewood. Includes £84.95 paid to Mrs. Boughton as her third part, and additional equal distributions to legatees Reuben B. Boughton, Thomas Boughton, John Boughton, and Broocks Boughton. On 27 May 1824 Lewis Howerton and Elizabeth, his wife; John Boughan and Francis, his wife; John Boughton and Ann, his wife; Elizabeth Howerton; and Charles Howerton sell property to John Dunn. This property was received from their late father, Charles Howerton, who died intestate. His only children, according to the deed: Lewis Howerton, Frances Boughan, Ann Boughton, Elizabeth Howerton, Charlotte Howerton, and Heritage Howerton. All parties signed. In attorney notes from McKan v. Trimyer from about 1833, Benja Boughton, William Boughton and Elizabeth William were nephews and neice of Joshua Boughton. That Joshua Boughton was in possession of the property in question 26 or 27 years ago, that he killed a negro and ran away leaving two brothers Benja and Wm and no children, that Benjamin and Elizabeth Williams are the only children of William. A John Boughton is a son of Benjamin. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 44, item 44-B-40.]

On 29 September 1834, Jno Boughton made purchases at the sale of the estate of Philip Clarke, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 21–22.]

On 25 March 1835, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Alexander Dunn, deceased, was made by Wm. L. Waring, John Boughton and Brooks Boughton. (At the top, the name Boughton is twice written Booton.) [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 362.]

In March 1836 John Boughton served on a grand jury for Essex County. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 45, item 45-M-45.]

The will of John Boughton was dated 26 July 1836. Executor to sell all land and proceeds to be divided between my three children: Charles H., Joshua L., and Ann H. Boughton. Son Charles to have servants Lewis and Lucy. Son Joshua to have servant Kingston. Daughter Ann to have servants Agnes and her child Matilda. Lucy and Matilda to be valued, and the amount of valuation to be divided in three equal parts, and Charles to pay to Joshua one third, and should Matilda not be valued to one that I wish Charles to make it up. Remainder of property to be divided between my three children. I have sold to my Brother Broockes Boughton the land where he lives for $444, due 1 March 1835, and my executor to made a deed for the sale of the land. My brother Reuben B. Boughton to be sole executor. Signed John Boughton. Witnesses: J C Clopton, Thomas Boughton, Brooks Boughton. Proved on 15 August 1836. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 60–61.]

On 15 August 1836, Reuben B Boughton, Jones C Clopton and George T F Larmier were bound in the penalty of $8,000 for Reuben B Boughton’s executorship of the estate of John Boughton, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 61.]
