On 20 October 1800, Charles Howerton, along with Jno Haile, Richard Thomas Haile, Ambrose Hunley, William Newbill, George Howerton and Wm Howerton bound themselves $4,000 to Essex County court, as Jno Haile and Charles Howerton were named administrators of the goods of Ambrose Howerton deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 37–38.]

On 18 January 1813 John Boughan and Charles Howerton were appointed guardians of Catharine Boughan and Thomas Boughan, orphans of Major Boughan, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Guardian Book 4, page 37.]

On 14 March 1814, Charles Howerton witnessed the will of Mary St. John. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 77.]

In an undated petition from around 1814 or 1815, in the case of St. Johns admr & others plts against Howertons admr &c defts, orators John St. John admr of Elizabeth St. John deceased, Jack J. Willis, admr of Rachel Willis decd, & Carter Croxton state that at the division of Ambrose Howerton’s estate the court assigned to widow Catharine Howerton 55 acres and 2 slaves. She died January 1814. The children should now inherit. They are: Elizabeth, now deceased, who died before Catharine, and who was the wife of orator John St. John, Rachel wife of Jack J. Willis, Rachel also having died before Catharine, and Robert Howerton. They complain against Charles Howerton, surviving admr of Ambrose Howerton, and Robert Howerton under 21 by Robert G. Haile. In 1820, Lewis Howerton, Richard St. John, James Wood and Geo. Wyatt were bound $5,000 for Lewis Howerton’s administration of the estate of Charles Howerton. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 152–153.]

On 7 December 1820 an inventory was made of the estate of Charles Howerton by Peter Brooke, Isaac Brooke, and James Croxton, Jr. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 174–176.]

On 19 August 1822, Lewis Howerton, James Wood and John Boughan were bound $5,000 for Lewis Howerton’s administration of the estate of Charles Howerton. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 328.]

On 27 May 1824 Lewis Howerton and Elizabeth, his wife; John Boughan and Francis, his wife; John Boughton and Ann, his wife; Elizabeth Howerton; and Charles Howerton sell property to John Dunn. This property was received from their late father, Charles Howerton, who died intestate. His only children, according to the deed: Lewis Howerton, Frances Boughan, Ann Boughton, Elizabeth Howerton, Charlotte Howerton, and Heritage Howerton. All parties signed. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 41, page 272.]

In 1830, orators and oratrices John St. John and Betty his wife, and Harry Howerton, Rachel Howerton, Patsey Gaines Howerton and Robert G. Howerton infants by John St. John complained to the Chancery Court. That Ambrose Howerton died ____ seized of 200 acres of land in Southfarnham Parish and the County of Essex and slaves and other property, leaving Cathe Howerton his widow and your orators and oratrices Betty W. St. John and Harry, Rachel, Patsey Gaines and Robert G. Howerton his only children. Administration of the estate was granted to Charles Howerton and John Haile.
