On 16 December 1716, Jomes Griffing witnessed the will of William Upshaw. He appeared in court on 17 May 1720 to prove the will. [Essex County, Virginia, Wills, Inventories and Settlements of Estates No. 3, 1717–1721, pages 143–144, as abstracted by John Frederick Dorman.]
On 19 September 1720, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Erasmus Allen was given by David Scott, John his E mark Gatewood, James Griffing and John Haile. Total £30.2.2 plus two negroes not counted. Dinah her D mark Allen and John Allen executors. Ordered recorded 18 October 1720. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pages 213–216.]
An inventory of the estate of Joseph Baker was made 28 December 1720 by William Greenhill, Samll. Wagoner, and Jas. Griffing. Returned on 21 February 1720. Dear wife to have estate during her life. Daughters Hannah, Sarah, Mary and Ann. Executors to be wife and friends Wm Roane and John Upshaw. Dated 27 March 1739. Signed James Griffing.
