James Griffing was mentioned in the 27 March 1739 will of his father James Griffing, who called him his dear and only son. James was to receive all land except 20 acres. The will was proved on 15 May 1739. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 6, pages 174–175.]
On 4 December 1755, James Griffing cast votes for Mr. John Upshaw and Colonel William Daingerfield for burgesses of Essex County. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 27, pages 248–252.]
On 5 May 1756, a James Griffing of the County of Essex sold to James Mills of the County of Essex, Tappahannock, Merchant. For £25 current money, trees for a house. Signed James Griffing.
