On 18 March 1765, On the motion of Thomas Turner Executor &c of James Turner decdeased It is ordered that William Dunn (Black) Henry Purkins, James Banks and William Dunn (White) or three of them (being first sworn according to Law) do value the Estate of the said decedent in Current money and that the Executor return an Inventory thereof to the Court. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 26, page 42.]

By order of November 1768, an appraisal and division of the estate of William Gatewood was made by a J: Edmondson, James Booker and a James Banks. Ordered recorded 17 July 1769. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 12, pages 368–369.]

On 10 December 1768, an appraisement of the estate of Jonathan Dunn was made by James Banks, William Dunn B, and Luke Covington, and was returned to court on 21 May 1770. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 12, pages 388–389.]

On 17 July 1769, by order of the November Court 1768, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Catherine Gatewood was returned, made by J. Edmondson, a James Banks and William Dunn B. Total valuation £42.2.0-1/2. Ordered recorded 17 July 1769. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 12, pages 366–367.]

On 21 May 1770, an account of the sales of the estate of Jonathan Dunn was returned to court and ordered to be recorded. Includes purchases by Wm. Dunn (Black), Robt. Cole, Josiah Minture, John Brizendine Junr., Wm. Bird, Nathan Dunn, Wm. Dunn (Jonathan’s Son), Isaac Sheridan, Wm. Snodgrass, Jonn[?] Crow, John Dobbins, Gilbert Tureman, James Croxton, Thomas Dunn (long), William Dunn (White), and James Banks. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 12, pages 389–390.]

On 30 January 1787, the inventory of the estate of Richard Brown was made by Wm Dunn, a James Banks and John Dunn. Ordered recorded 21 July 1788. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 76–78.]

On 21 January 1793, a James Banks was mentioned as a neighboring landowner in a deed from John Boughan and Sarah his wife of the County of Essex and parish of Southfarnham to Thomas Crow of the same. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 33, page 436.]

Pursuant to an order of court dated 15 December 1800, a division of the slaves of James Banks, deceased, was made on 18 December 1800 by L Booker, James Dix, and John Jones. Lots went to James Banks (Harry, Cate and child Happy, Lewis), Elizabeth B. Allen (John, Milly and child Tunstall, Winney and Janes [?]), and William Banks (Dick, Juno, Hannah, and Massey), so that with adjustments each lot was valued at £217.13.4. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 72–73.]

On 19 October 1801, the settlement of Thomas Allen’s executorship of the estate of James Banks, by John Jones, Lewis Dix, Jno. Haile, and James Allen, settled in the presence of Elizabeth B. Allen, William Banks, and James Banks, was ordered to be recorded. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 100–101.]

On 15 June 1801, the estate of James Banks, deceased, in account with executor James Banks, Jr., was settled by John Jones, Lewis Dix, Jno. Haile, and James Allen, with transactions in 1785 and 1800. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 101–102.]
