James Gatewood was listed in the 1744 will of his grandmother Amy Baker as “my Grandson James Gatewood ye son of my son James Gatewood”. James received a Negro named Essex and a Negro named Sarah. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 335–337.]
On 7 December 1751, James Gatewood junior witnessed a deed from John Chamberlain to James Gatewood and Water Dunn, all of Essex County. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 26, pages 97–99.]
