James Gatewood was mentioned in the will of his father John Gatewood, dated 14 November 1706. He is mentioned as being one of the three youngest children and received a portion of the estate. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 328.]

James Gatewood received a bequest in the 20 September 1720 will of his stepfather Joseph Baker. He was to receive all the land and plantation Joseph Baker bought of Thomas Wheeler, as long as James did not debarr his mother from using or occupying the property duirng her life. The will was proved on 15 November 1720. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pages 220–223.]

On 16 May 1721, James Gatewood witnessed a deed from Amy Baker to her son Richard Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 16, page 296, as abstracted by John Frederick Dorman.]

James Gatewood received a bequest in the 21 November 1722 will of Thomas Magrah of South Farnham Parish, Essex County. He was also named executor of the will. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, page 5.]

On 18 December 1722, James Gatewood, John Gatewood and David Scott were bound £100 sterling for James Gatewood’s execution of the last will and testament of Thomas Magrah. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, pages 5–6.]

An appraisal of the estate of Samuel Waggener was made by David Scott, James Gatewood, and Thos Gatewood. No total. Returned by Christina her C mark waggener adx. Ordered recorded 18 November 1729. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, pages 314–316.]

An inventory of the estate of Mr John Edmondson was ordered on 19 March 1733 and was made by James Jones, James Gatewood, and Thos Hardy. Presented by Mrs Mary Edmondson. Ordered recorded 16 April 1733. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 5, pages 238a-242.]

On 2 October 1736, James Gatewood witnessed the will of John Reeves. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 6, pages 63–64.]

On 20 November 1739, George Reeves, Benjamin Winslow, William Daingerfield and James Gatewood were bound £500 current money for George Reeves’s execution of the last will and testament of Sarah Reeves. On 20 December 1743, Sarah Picket, Thomas Waring and James Gatewood were bound £1,000 sterling for Sarah Picket’s execution of the last will and testament of William Picket. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 67–68.]

James Gatewood was mentioned in the 1744 will of his mother Amy Baker. James received some residual property and was appointed an executor of the will. Thomas and James Gatewood presented the will in Essex County Court on 18 June 1745. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 335–337.]

On 18 June 1745, James and Thomas Gatewood, with John Hunt and John Upshaw, were bound £1,000 for James and Thomas Gatewood’s administration of the goods chattles and credits of Amy Baker. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 337–339.]

On 22 March 1748/9, a case was continued in court of John Gatewood, Henry Gatewood, John Farguson and Sarah his wife which Sarah is a Daughter and Legatee of Amy Baker deceased, Thomas Arnold and Frans his wife which said Frans is a Daughter and Legatee of Amy Baker decd, David Scott and Amy his wife which said Amy is one of the Daugthers and Legatees of Amy Baker decd, against Thomas Gatewood and James Gatewood Executors of Amy Baker decd. It was ordered that Thos Edmondson Thomas Wiatt James Jones William Roane Gentlemen or any three of them settle the defendants accounts of administration of the estate of Amy Baker deceased and make report to next court. On 21 March 1749, James Gatewood served on a jury in a land trail suit between Thomas Dix and James Campbell and Ann his wife. [Essex County, Virginia, Land Trails 1741–1760, pages 111–113.]

On 7 December 1751, John Chamberlain of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham sold to James Gatewood and Water Dunn of the same. For £290 current money, 250 acres. Signed John Chamberlain. Witnesses: Tho Barker, James Gatewood junr., Ann Gatewood. Recorded 21 July 1752. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 26, pages 97–99.]

On 25 September 1752, John Chamberlain and Ann his wife of the County of Essex, Parish of Southfarnham sold to James Gatewood. Lease and release. For 5 shillings/£90 current money, 182 acres where Thomas Moor formerly lived. Dated 25 September 1752. Signed John Chamberlain, Ann Chamberlain. Witnesses: John Roy, Alexander Smith, Edward Rowzee jr, Daniel Daly, ffrancis Jones. Recorded 27 September 1752. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 26, pages 129–133.]

On 5 October 1752, James Gatewood Senr of the County of Essex, Parish of Southfarnham, planter, sold to John Clements of the same, physician. Lease and release. For 5 shillings/£150 current money, 182 acres. Signed James Gatewood. Witnesses: Archibald Ritchie, James Gray, Pitman Scandrell. Recorded 20 March 1753. On 19 November 1753, James Gatewood and Penelope his wife of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham sold to James Mills gentleman. Lease and release. For 5 shillings/£60, 600 acres that formerly belonged to John Gatewood deceased. Signed James Gatewood, Penelope Gatewood. Witnesses: as to John Gatewood: John Figgins, Henry Wisheart; as to John and Penelope Gatewood: John Corrie; as to Penelope Gatewood: John Bowcock, Ann Bowcock. Recorded 19 March 1754.
