Amy is mentioned in the will of her husband John Gatewood, dated 14 November 1706. She received a portion of the estate, not specified. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 328.]

On 10 January 1707, Amy Gatewood, Richard Gatewood, John Burnett and Francis Shackelford were bound £500 sterling for Amy and Richard’s executorship of the estate of John Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 329.]

Amy Baker was mentioned in the 20 September 1720 will of her husband Joseph Baker. She was to receive, after other bequests, the remainder of the estate and was appointed an executrix. She presented the will will in court on 15 November 1720. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pages 220–223.]

The inventory of the estate of Joseph Baker was made 28 December 1720 by William Greenhill, Samll. Wagoner, and Jas. Griffing. Total valuation £452.2.7, including three Negroes valued at £70 and one servant man named Charles Shackleford valued at £5. Signed by Amey her x mark Baker. Returned on 21 February 1720. On 9 February 1721, Anthony North of Southfarnham Parish and County of Essex, planter, leased to Amy Baker of the same, widow. For 5 shillings, 100 acres more or less. Signed Anthony North. Witnesses: Pr Godfrey, John Webb. Recorded 20 February 1721. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 17, pages 6–7.]

On 10 February 1721, Anthony North of Southfarnham Parish and County of Essex, planter, released to Amy Baker of the same, widow. For £60 current money, 100 acres more or less. Signed Anthony North. On 16 May 1721, Amy Baker of Southfarnham Parish, Essex County, gave land to her son Richard. For the natural love, good will and effection I bear towards my loving son Richard Gatewood, 50 acres upon the lower side of a great swamp which goes into a little creek that comes out of Horskins Creek on the south side of the said creek… Signed Amy her X mark Baker. The will of Amy Baker: “In the Name of God Amen I Amy Baker of Essex County and Parish of Southfarnham being Sick and weak of Body but of Perfect Sence and memory thanks be given to Almighty God for the same and Calling to mind the uncertainty of this Mortal Life do make this my Last will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say First and Principally I Render my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it hopeing to Receive Pardon & Forgiveness of all my Sins by ye merrits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and to have a Joyfull Resurrection with The Just at the Last day my Body I Committ to ye Ground to be Decently Buried at ye Dixcretion of my Executors hereafter named and as touching Such temporal Estate as it hath Pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and bequeath the same as followeth Vizt Imprimus I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Amy Gatewood ye Daughter of my son James Gatewood one Negro Boy Named Bristol and a Negro Girl Named Frank Together with my Tract of Land Called north Hole to her and her heirs Lawfully begotten of her body forever also a feather bed and furniture also one Cow and Calf one Iron pott and a Sow and Pigg Item I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Ann Gatewood the Daughter of my son James Gatewood one Negrowoman Named Henny and her Increase also a Negro Boy Called will to her and her heirs Lawfully begotten of her Body forever Item my will and Desire is that if Either of my said Two Grand Daughters aforesaid Should die and Leave no such Lawful Issue or die unmarried that then her part so dying to go to the Survivor and her heirs Lawfully begotten of her body forever Item I give to my Grandson Benjamin Gatewood the Son of my Son James Gatewood The Tract of Land that I now live on and a Negro Named Guy to him and his heirs Lawfully begotten of his Body forever Item I give to my Grandson James Gatewood ye son of my son James Gatewood One Negro named Essex and a Negro Named Sarah to him and his heirs Lawfully begotten of his Body beforever [sic] Item I give and bequeath all my Wearing cloaths to be Equally Divided Between my three Daughters Trances Arnold, Amy Scott and Sarah Farguson Item I give to Katharine Gatewood the Widow of my son William Gatewood one Gold Ring of Twenty Shillings Price Item I give my Grand Daughter Amy the Daughter of my son John Gatewood one Gold Ring Item my will and Desire is that all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Estate whatsoever that is not already Bequeathed or Given Away I give and Bequeath to Be Equally Divided Between my seven Children Viz. On 22 March 1748/9, a case was continued in court of John Gatewood, Henry Gatewood, John Farguson and Sarah his wife which Sarah is a Daughter and Legatee of Amy Baker deceased, Thomas Arnold and Frans his wife which said Frans is a Daughter and Legatee of Amy Baker decd, David Scott and Amy his wife which said Amy is one of the Daugthers and Legatees of Amy Baker decd, against Thomas Gatewood and James Gatewood Executors of Amy Baker decd. It was ordered that Thos Edmondson Thomas Wiatt James Jones William Roane Gentlemen or any three of them settle the defendants accounts of administration of the estate of Amy Baker deceased and make report to next court.
