Richard Gatewood was listed in the will of his father John Gatewood, dated 14 November 1706. He received the plantation his father now lived on and was named an executor of the will. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 328.]

On 10 January 1707, Amy Gatewood, Richard Gatewood, John Burnett and Francis Shackelford were bound £500 sterling for Amy and Richard’s executorship of the estate of John Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 329.]

In 1717, Richard Gatewood received payments from the estate of Robert Bizwell. [Essex County, Virginia, Wills, Inventories and Settlements of Estates No. 3, 1717–1721, pages 70–71, as abstracted by John Frederick Dorman.]

Richard Gatewood received a bequest in the 20 September 1720 will of his stepfather Joseph Baker. He was mentioned but not named, being one of the children of Joseph’s wife Amy. Richard was to receive a gold ring of the value and cost of twenty shillings. The will was proved on 15 November 1720. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pages 220–223.]

On 16 May 1721, Amy Baker of Southfarnham Parish, Essex County, gave land to her son Richard. For the natural love, good will and effection I bear towards my loving son Richard Gatewood, 50 acres upon the lower side of a great swamp which goes into a little creek that comes out of Horskins Creek on the south side of the said creek… Signed Amy her X mark Baker. Richard Gatewood was mentioned in the 28 April 1728 will of his father-in-law Henry Reeves. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, pages 342–344.]

The division of the estate of Mr Henry Reeves decd was made on 19 May 1730, delivered to the severall legatees according to his will. Lists accounts for The Widdows thirds, Mrs Sarah Reeves, Mr John Reeves, Mr Samuel Reeves, Mr George Reeves, Mr Richard Gatewood, Mrs Eliz: Reeves, Mrs Ann Reeves. Also dated 13 June 1730.
