On 9 September 1680, a jury consisting of John Gatewood, James Bahun, John Waters, Tho: Wheeler, Tho: Coggin, ffran Browne, Rich. Gregory, Tho: Greene, Tho: Edmundson, Rich Haile, Tho: Wood, and William Johnson was impaneled to consider whether land of William Lark late of the County of Rappahannock should escheat to the crown. On 10 November 1702, Will Johnson & Eliz his wife, John Picket, Will Picket, John Gatewood and Richard Jones of the County of Essex were bound the sum of £500 sterling, Will Johnson and Eliz his wife & John Picket & Will Picket having obtained a Probate of the last Will & Testamt of Henry Picket deced. The will of John Gatewood was dated 14 November 1706: “In the Name of God Amen November the fourteenth Anno Domini One thousand Seven Hundred and Six I John Gatewood of Southfarnham parish Essex County Planter being very sick and weak of Body but of sound and perfect memory praised be almighty God for the same doe make & ordain this to be my last will and Testamt Vizt: Imprimis I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hoping through the meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christ my onely Saviour and redeemer to receive free pardon of all my Sins and a joyfull Resurrection at the last Day And as for my body I give it to my Mother the Earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executrix or Executor hereafter Named and as for my Wordly Estate that God hath sent me after my Just debts and funerall Charges paid I Dispose of in form and Manner following Item I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Son John Gatewood one hundred acres of Land that I formerly bought of Edwin Thacker lying and bounding on John Cheeks line, I Say to my Son John and his heires for Ever Item — I give and bequeath unto my Eldest Daughter ffrances Shackelford one shilling— Item I give unto my son Richard Gatewood the plantation I now live upon and all the Land pertaining thereto to him and his heires for Ever— Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Thomas Gatewood One hundred and fifty acres of Land lying and being in the abovesd County and Parish being part of a parcell of Land that I formerly bought of Capt Richard Haile now deceased it being also part of five thousand acres of Land wch did formerly belong unto Collo Thomas Goodrich Mr Henry Aubrey and Majr George Morrice all deceased I Say to my son Thomas and his heires for Ever. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Henry Gatewood Seventy five acres of Land begining at a Corner Tree Standing against Simon Copners[?] house who is now deceased, and from thence runing to a white Oak Corner Tree standing upon my son John Gatewoods Land and from thence runing towards Joseph Billenders land till the seventy five acres and made out to my son Henry Gatewood and his heires forever. As also I give & bequeath unto my aforesd Son Henry Gatewood one Six Year Old Stear and one Cow and Calfe and her encrease to him & his heires forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Amie Birnett four Thousand pounds of sweet sented Tobb: and One bay Mare wth a blase in her face branded on ye near buttock wth this brand 3. Item I give and bequeath all the rest of my worldly Estate whatsoever to be equally divided one as much as ye other between my three youngest Children and my beloved wife Amie Gatewood Namely between my beloved wife and Sarah Gatewood and William Gatewood and James Gatewood. Item I do hereby Disannull make void and deny all former will and Testamts Legacies and bequests by me heretofore or at any time Willed made given and bequeathed and do publish this to be my Last Will and Testamt making my beloved wife Amie Gatewood and my son Richard Gatewood my Sole Executrix and Executor, In Witness whereof I of this my Last Will and Testament have hereunto set my hand and affexed my seale the date before mentioned.” Signed John Gatewood [seal]. On 3 January 1706/1707, Leonard Chamberlin, John Gaimes, James ffullerton and Wm Johnson made an inventory of the estate of John Gatewood. Much cloth, including table linin, kersey, searge, cotton, buttons. Total £187.17.9 plus 21.3.9-1/2. Sworn by James Boughan. Recorded 10 March 1706/1707.
