The will of Hugh Campbell of the County of Essex and Parish of South Farnham was dated 6 June 1791. Beloved wife Sarah Campbell. Son Hugh. Daughter Mary Ann Campbell. Another child “(of which She is supposed to be pregnant)”. Executors: wife Sarah, friends Robert Patton, William Roane, John Warden. Signed Hugh Campbell. Witnesses: Jno Brockenbrough, Sally Barnes, Thomas Roane jr. Proved 19 July 1791. Certificate of probate granted to Wm Roane. On 16 September 1799 administration of the estate granted to William Barclay with James Dix and James Webb his securities. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 14, page 257.]

On 16 September 1799, administration will the will annexed of the estate of Hugh Campbell was granted to William Barclay. William Barclay, James Dix, and James Webb acknowledge their bond in the amount of $20,000. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, page 497.]

On 3 June 1813, an equal division of the estate of Hugh Campbell (who was not mentioned by name) was made to Hugh Campbell and James C. Roy by Reuben M Garnett, Archibald Ritchie, William H. Hutchason and Edward Wright. This was according to an order of 21 August 1810, and ordered recorded 17 June 1817. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 417–418.]

On 16 July 1821, Hugh Campbell and Philip Gatewood were bound in the penalty of $15,000 for Hugh Campbell’s administration de bonis non with the will annexed of the estate of Hugh Campbell, deceased, unadministered by William Garnett, sheriff of Essex committee of the Est of said Hugh Campbell decd. unadmd. by William Barclay admor &c. of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits of said Hugh Campbell decd unadmd. by William Roane Exor of said Hugh Campbell decd. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 221.]

The estate of Hugh Campbell decd. in account with William Barclay from 1800 to 1825 was ordered recorded on 16 December 1833. The accounting includes a copy of an account of James Dix decd. who was agent for William Barclay. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, pages 198–221.]
