On 21 March 1743, a James Garnett Gent and John Gatewood were bound £50 for James Garnett’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of John Spiers deceased. Signed Jas Garnett, John his E mark Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 109–110.]
On 21 June 1748, James Garnett of the County of Essex sold to William Munday of the same. For £30 current money, one Acre of Ground Situate on the North Side of Gilsons Swamp Being the place where the said Garnett had once a water Grist Mill Standing and also all the Right & Tittle of him the the [sic] said James Garnett of in and to one other acre of Land adjoining to the aforesaid Acres on the south Side the sd. Swamp whereon the said William Mundays Mill now stands all which Land is now in the Actuall possession of the said Munday. Signed Jas: Garnett. Witnesses: John Smith, Richd. On 17 August 1754, Berryman Brown and Mary his wife of the County of Essex sold to a James Garnett of the same. For £15 pounds current money, 50 acres more or less. Dated 17 August 1754. On 16/17 June 1755, Robert Brooking and Francis his wife of King and Queen County sold to a James Garnett of Essex County. Lease and release. For 5 shillings/£450 current money, 375 acres. On 4 December 1755, in a pole of freeholders for electing burgesses in Essex County, a Captain James Garnett received a total of 158 votes, including those of Isaac Gatewood, John Conoly, James Dix, Benja. Beesley, Stephen Munday, Thomas Munday, John Allen, Phillip Gatewood, Joseph Reeves, Cornelius Noel, Joseph Burnett, John Gordan, James Munday, and Willm. Munday. James Garnett was mentioned in the 15 October 1756 will of his father-in-law William Taylor. He witnessed the will. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 12, pages 69–70.]
