According to his Revolutionary Way pension file, Thomas Dix enlisted in 1776 in Virginia. He was born January 1755 and died 17 July 1824 [but see Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 408, which suggests he died earlier]. He married on 11 January 1781 Sarah Edmondson, who was born 13 November 1751. Their son Thomas Edmondson was born 14 October 1781. The last will and testament of Sarah was probated 17 November 1840 when no children were living but listed 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. [Patrick G. “Thomas Dix (1755–1824) enlisted, 1776, in the 7th Virginia regiment, and continued in that regiment until he was appointed 2nd lieutenant, serving in Col. Charles Harrison’s regiment of artilery, promoted to 1st lieutenant, and rose to the rank of captain lieutenant same regiment. In 1818 he applied for a pension. Thomas was mentioned in the 4 September 1784 will of his father, Thomas Dix, proved 16 February 1789. “I give to my Son Thomas Dix the Negro Boy Nelson, which is Now in his possession & to his heirs & assigns also a bed & Furniture & the other Moiety of the Debt due me by bond from Charles Thornton for Twenty Thousand pounds of Tobacco, which I do hereby devise to him my said Son Thomas in lieu off, & as full Compensation for any part of or Share in my Lands and appurtenances...” He was also entitled to a share of the remainder of the estate. The estate of Henry Allen in was account with Philemon Gatewood from 1783 to 1785. Settled to 18 November 1785 by Thomas Dix, John Haile and Thomas Dix Junier on 18 January 1786. Ordered recorded 19 June 1786. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 14, pages 16–22.]
On 11 October 1787, Thomas Dix Junier witnessed a deed from Vincent Coleman and Ann his wife of the County of Essex to Thomas Dix. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 33, pages 89–90.]

On 16 May 1796, William Wood was recommended in Essex County court to the Governor of Virginia to serve as captain of the county militia to a company formerly commanded by Thomas Dix, he having resigned. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 32, pages 265-266.]
On 18 July 1796, John Haile, Thomas Dix, and Ambrose Howerton were bound £1,500, as John Haile was appointed administrator of the estate of Richd Thomas Haile deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, page 254.]
On 19 July 1796, Thomas Dix and Sarah his wife of the parish of southfarnham and County of Essex sold to Francis T. Brooke of the County of Spotsylvania. For £130.18.9, land in the parish of Southfarnham and County of Essex, 52-3/8 acres, part of a tract that was purchased by John Edmondson decd from Henry Brown “and which said tract or parcell of Land hereby conveyed or intended to be conveyed was allotted to the said Thos Dix and Sarah his Wife for the proportion of the sd Sarah of the Lands Whereof Susanna Lewis, a daughter of the said John Edmondson, died seized”. Thomas Dix received property in the will of James Wright of Essex County, dated 23 January 1813 and proved 17 January 1814. On 10 November 1816, the lands of Lewis Dix, deceased, were divided by Robert G. Haile, John Waring and Ph: Montague. “We alloted to Thomas Dix one hundred and seventy acres, as one third portion thereof respect being had to Quality as well as Quantity. Susan Dix having departed this life about the 25th day of October devising all her interest in the estate of her brother the said Lewis Dix to her sister Catharine Dix, we allotted the remaining two third parts containing Two hundred and ninety nine acres including the Houses and other improvements to the said Catharine Dix”. In 1817, a John Jones plt complained of Thomas Dix deft in custody &c of a plea of trespass. For that the deft did, on the __ day of ____ 1816 at the county aforesaid with force and arms enter into the clo[illegible] of the plt then [illegible] and then and there with force and arms to wit with whips, sticks & fists did assault, beat wound & ill treat a negro man slave named James the property of the plt.
