Then to daughter Elizabeth Brown all estate. If she should die or have no issue, then estate to be divided between godsons Major Boughan and Cornelious Brown. Executors to be William Dunn W, Major Boughan and Beloved Wife. Signed Richard Brown. Witnesses: HPurkins, William Griggs. Presented on 16 January 1787 by Major Boughan and proved by sundry Witnesses. On 30 January 1787, the inventory of the estate of a Richard Brown was made by Wm Dunn, James Banks and John Dunn. Ordered recorded 21 July 1788. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 76–78.]
On 17 June 1799, Major Boughan, executor of Richard Brown, filed a complaint in court. That Richard Brown sometime in 1777 acknoweldged himself indebted to McCall & Shedden. But “yr orator begs leave to observe, that being oppos’d to the principles of our revolution, those merchts did not remain, in America during that conflict, which terminated so honorably to our arms.” He seeks a waiver of the payment due.
