Gabriel was mentioned in the 4 September 1784 will of his father, Thomas Dix, proved 16 February 1789. “I give to my Eldest Son Gabriel the Negro boy Davey which is now in his possession & to his heirs & assigns; also a Bed & Furniture & a Moiety of the debt due me from Charles Thornton by bond for Twenty Thousand pounds of Tobacco, which I do hereby devise To him my Sd. Son Gabriel in lieu off, and as full compensation for any part of or whare in my Lands & appurtenances ... ” He was also entitled to a share of the remainder of the estate. He was named a co-executor of the will with brothers Thomas and John. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 14, pages 137–140.]

In 1790, Gabriel Dix appeared on the tax lists of King & Queen County, Virginia. He was assessed for land (illegible online), for one male over 16, 3 blacks above 16, 2 blacks between 12 and 16, and 2 horses.

On 20 November 1795, articles of agreement were executed between “Gabriel, Thomas, James & Lewis Dix sons of Thomas Dix senr (late of Essex County) Decd. whereas the said Thomas Dix senr Decd. did by his last Will & Testament bearing date the 24th day of September 1784 devise all his Land to be equally divided between his three sons John, James & Lewis Dix, & that if either of the said three sons Jno Jas & Lewis should die without issue, their part so dieing, should be equally divided amongst all his sons meaning the parties to these presents Gabriel, Thomas James & Lewis; the above mentioned son John having died without Issue; his third part beame to be divided amonst the above parties Gabl Thos Jas & Lewis, who have mutually agreed & consented to have the above mentioned Land laid off & divided by William Jones a surveyor in Essex County...” A plat is included, a house being shown within the parcel of Lewis Dix. On 17 February 1800, administration of the estate of William Wood, deceased, was granted to Sally Wood. Sally Wood, Gabriel Dix, James Dix, and Lewis Dix acknowledge their bond in the penalty of $4,000. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 524–525.]
