Joseph Reeves was mentioned in the 9 January 1686 will of his father Henry Reeves. Joseph and his brother James were to receive land jointly, and Joseph received additional land. He was to receive a share of the personal estate. Joseph was to be of full age when he attained the age of eighteen years and was also to receive one year’s schooling. On 19 August 1707, an inventory of the good and chattles of James Reeves was taken in Essex County, Virginia in obedience of a court order of 11 August 1707. The appraisers were Robert Mills, William Grinall, and John Waggoner. Total valuation 112-14-11, plus an additional 11-13-2. “Presented by Henry Reeves, Joseph Reeves and Thomas Munday & Mary his wife late Mary Reeves Admrs of the Estate of James Reeves…” [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 13, pages 33–35.]
On 10 April 1708, The petition of Thomas Sthreshly & Elizabeth his wife sheweth that James Reeves late of this County deced left divers goods and Chattels at ye time of his Death of consderable value in case whereof Henry Reeves Joseph Reeves Thomas Munday & Mary his wife had administration granted them of the sd James his Estate but they have not made acct thereof to ye Court, therefore the petitioners pray that sd Admrs. be sumon’d to make up acct of sd Estate that distribution may be made there of according to Law & particularly to Elizabeth one of the petitioners & Sister of the said James deced It is therefore ordered by ye Court that the sd Admrs. be sumoned to ye next Court to make up an acct of the sd Estate that distribution may be so made as aforsd. Joseph Reeves was mentioned in the 1709 will of his mother Elizabeth. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 14, page 17.]
The will of Joseph Reeves was dated 3 December 1716. Wife Jane to have one third of land during her life. Three sons, Jackson, Joseph and James. Eldest son Jackson, middlemost son Joseph, youngest son James. Signed Jos: Reeves. Witnesses: Jos: Baker, Ann Lewis, David his S mark Lewis. Proved 16 July 1717. On 16 July 1717, Jane Reeves, John Bates, Godfrey Stanton, and Charles Gresham were bound £400 sterling for Jane Reeves’s execution of the last will and testament of Joseph Reeves.
