Robert Gaines Haile was a member of the 55th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War: Haile, Robert Gaines: Lived at “Beaver’s Hill” near Dunbrooke in Essex Co. Enl. 5/21/61 in Co. F, as 2nd Sergeant. Elected 2nd Lt. 7/17/61. Served as Acting Post Commissary and Q.M. at Fort Lowry, 11/27/61–4/62. Was in command of the picket at Meadow Bridge when General Lee’s wife was returned to the Confederacy at that place on 6/10/62. On 6/12/62 he declared himself “Heartily sick of the war,” but willing “to suffer any hardship rather than submit to the abolitionists.” Promoted 1st Lt. 6/24/62. MWIA at Frayser’s Farm 6/30/62. The wound paralyzed him below the chest. He died in Richmond 7/26/62. Promoted to Captain before he died. Left a widow, Mollie, and two little girls. A plaque in the Essex County courthouse states that Capt. Robert Gaines Haile Jr. died on 26 July 1862.
