William Dix was mentioned in 21 May 1698 will of his father John Dicks. He was apparently one of the younger sons, not yet 21, and was to “be free” at the age of 18. William was to receive a portion of 500 acres bought of James and John Boughan. The will was proved on 10 April 1710. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 13, page 308; Essex County, Virginia, Land Trails 1741–1760, pages 111–113.]

On 21 May 1714, brothers Thomas Dicks, James Dicks, William Dicks and John Dicks signed articles of agreement that divided the land of their father, John Dicks, deceased. The land had been purchased by their father from Major James Boughan, deceased, and was surveyed by Mr. James Boughan Surveyor containing about 505 acres. Signed Thomas Dicks, James his HH mark Dicks, William his + mark Dicks, John his HH mark Dicks. Witnesses: James his N mark Nubell, George his HH mark Nubell, Samuel Coats. Recorded 20 April 1761, proved by the oath of James Nubill. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 28, page 303.]

On 13 December 1718, William Dicks witnessed a deed from Wm Cox, Tho: Meedes and Elizabeth his wife, John Wood and Thomas Wood to Bryant Edmondson. William signed with his mark +. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 15, pages 257–259.]

On 20 September 1723, Wm Dix served on a jury in Essex County. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 6, page 19.]

On 14 March 1725, William Dicks was mentioned as a landowner in a deed from James Dicks and Judey his wife to Erasmus Allen, all of the parish of Southfarnham and County of Essex. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 18, page 171.]

An inventory and appraisal of the estate of Erasmus Allen was made by John Hunt, Thos Gatewood and Wm his + mark Dix. Total £179.19.4-3/4. Returned by John Allen Admer. Ordered recorded 16 October 1739. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 6, pages 203–206.]

An additional inventory of Erasmus Allen was made by Thos Gatewood, John Hunt and William his + mark Dicks. Total £7.17.6. Ordered recorded 15 July 1740. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 6, page 267.]

An inventory and appraisal of the estate of John Haile was made by John ffarguson, James Allen and Wm Dix. Total valuation £141.1.0-1/2 plus some additions. Returned by John Haile and Mary Haile. The will of William Dix was dated 3 February 1745. To loving wife Martha Dix negro woman Coosey. To son John Dix all lands in Essex, but wife Martha is to have use of them during her life. Also gives to daughter Ann Dix, daughter Frances Gatewood who is wife of Thomas Gatewood, son James Dix, son Tandy Dix who is not yet 21, daughter Betty Dix who is not yet 21. Executors: James Allen, Silvanus Tandy and wife Martha. Signed William his | mark Dix. Witnesses: Thomas Haile, Wm his ) mark Munday. Proved 15 April 1746.
