On 17 December 1821, Benjamin Blake and Tandy Dix were bound in the penalty of $200 for Benjamin Blake’s administration of the estate of John G. Johnson. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 261.]
The will of Benjamin Blake was dated 4 April 1831. In the city of Philadelphia, my executors to purchase marble head and foot pieces to be placed at the graves of my wife and myself. To daughter Catharine negro girl Polly. To grandson Benjamin Blake Minor, my gold watch chain & seal, also four thousand Dollars to be held in trust until he reaches twenty one. To daughters Susan, Catharine and Adaline (under twenty one), thirty five shares each of Virginia Bank Stock. To son Benjamin and to youngest daughter Jane Louisa fifty shares of Virginia Bank Stock to be held in trust until they reach the age of twenty one or marry. Daughter Jane Louisa to stay with Mrs. Lucy Y. Gray until she reaches fourteen years, after which she may choose her own guardian. Land in Caroline County. I wish nothing to be done with my two fifths in the land and slaves now held by my brother William Blake’s widow as her dower, one of which said fifths I purchased from my sister Frances Wood, my said interest being one fifth in the negroes and personal estate, and the entire right and title to the Tract of Land known and called “the Waggon Road” plantation, lying in the County of Middlesex — my title arising from a Deed of Trust made by Samuel B. Wood for my benefit, and as Executor of William Wood to secure a certain sum of money advanced by me in my individual capacity and also another sum of money due me as Executor of the said William Wood…” My six children Frances Brockenbrough, Susan, Catharine, Adaline, Benjamin and Jane Louisa Blake. On 19 September 1831, Austin Brockenbrough was bound in the penalty of $145,000 for his executorship of the estate of Benjamin Blake, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 327.]
On 1 October 1831, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Benjamin Blake was made by Thomas Mathews, William H Frank, and John A Parker. Includes Negro Man Fielding, Negro Man Dick, Negro Man Peter, Negro Woman Lucinda & Young child, Negro Girl Lucy Ann about 12 years, Negro Boy John 4 Years old. Also includes a list of bonds on hand at the time of the death of Benjamin Blake, which are separated into insolvent and said to be good. Ordered recorded on 16 October 1837.
