Pitman was mentioned in the 10 November 1808 will of his father, James Johnston, proved 17 December 1810. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 253–254.]
The undated will of Pitman Johnston directed that the entire estate was to be given to “my Brother Mouring Johnston”. Signed Pitman Johnston. Witnesses: Thomas Gatewood, Thomas Coleman, Green his mark Coleman, Edmon his mark Ferril. Proved 17 July 1826. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, pages 415–416.]
On 17 July 1826, Mourning Johnston and Green Coleman were bound in the penalty of $600 for Mourning Johnston’s administration of the estate of Pitman Johnston. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 416.]
On 5 August 1826, an inventory and appraisement of the estate of Pitman Johnston was made by Joseph Alexander, Fullington Gatewood, and Jonathan Dunn. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, pages 71–72.]
